The Biggest Moments in Fashion 2021

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

As we have entered a new year and are reflecting on the previous, I can’t help but notice how many iconic moments in fashion took place. From the return of the Met Gala to the Fendi x Versace collab, the year had so many events that will be recognised for years to come.

FENDI X VERSACE

In September we saw the first look of the Fendi x Versace collaboration at Milan fashion week. At the show we saw models including Gigi Hadid, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss. In this collection we saw a wide variety of silhouettes, colours, patterns and styles. Kim Jones and Donatella Versace managed to incorporate their own iconic patterns, logos and styles into the pieces meaning that they were left with a gorgeous contrast of the two brands. Some outfits had an equal mix of both brands’ styles, some more of one brand but that is what made the collection so mesmerising and unique.

THE RETURN OF THE MET GALA

On the 13th of September, the Met Gala returned after a year's break due to Covid-19. The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the MET Museum in New York. Hundreds of celebrities are invited and show off their outfits based on a certain theme. This year the theme was ‘In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion’.This year, the chairs were Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Naomi Osaka and Amanda Gorman. The diversity in outfits we saw on fashion's biggest night out was outstanding! We saw Kim Kardashian West’s all black Balenciaga look, Lil Nas X’s 3 outfit display, Billie Eilish’s old Hollywood glam inspired Oscar De La Renta gown, Kendall Jenner’s Audrey Hepburn inspired mesh and jeweled Givenchy gown and Timothee Chalamet’s mostly white suit paired with Converse. Although there were lots of famous faces, there were a few we missed such as Zendaya, Bella Hadid, Blake Lively, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and a few more. There were mixed opinions on this Met Gala, while some loved the looks others thought they were disappointing.

FENDI X SKIMS

Versace wasn’t the only brand Fendi collaborated with in 2021. In November, it was announced that Kim Kardashian West’s brand ‘Skims’, known for their casual wear, lounge wear and underwear, collaborated with Fendi in releasing a line of clothing. On the Fendi x Skims website we saw dresses, jackets, leggings, jumpsuits, coords and dresses that mostly were Fendi logo-mania whereas some were more subtle and minimal. The pieces of the collection came in 6 colours, pinky-purple, white, beige, red, light army green and black. The prices of the collection ranged from $100-$400. Will we see a second drop in 2022?

THE PASSING OF VIRGIL ABLOH

Virgil Abloh, a big name in fashion. In late November of 2021, he passed away after a battle of cancer at the age of 41. He was the artistic director of Louis Vuitton Men’s and worked with Off-White. During his career, he held many fashion shows and released many iconic products. Many famous faces expressed their sadness of his death on instagram including Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Pharell Williams, Kanye West and Hailey Bieber. Members of the public placed flowers outside of Louis Vuitton and Off-White shops across the globe in his honour.

GUCCI X BALENCIAGA

Another collaboration we saw in 2021, Gucci x Balenciaga. We first saw signs of this collaboration when people spotted window displays in Gucci and Balenciaga shops to do with the other brand. We saw Gucci prints on Balenciaga designs, highly patterned sneakers and more. On Tik Tok, the Gucci-Balenciaga HourGlass bag became a huge hit amongst younger people. Some of the pieces from this collection were a lot more loved by people such as the HourGlass bag.

ZENDAYA IS A FASHION ICON

Zendaya is someone who people have always found stylish but 2021 was a year where she took the world by storm with her iconic red carpet looks. For the ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ premier we saw her in a spider web patterned, v neck cut dress. At the Dune Premier she rocked an all nude-beige leather dress that had a gathered aspect on the torso. And my favorite red carpet look of hers in 2021 was to the Ballon d’Or Ceremony. She fashioned a vintage Roberto Cavalli Look with and open back and gold decoration. This dress was elegant, unique and gorgeous, she was the right person to rock it!

Not only were her red carpet looks to die for, she was the winner of the 2021 CFDA Fashion Icon Award. This made her the youngest recipient of the award in history. To the event she wore a red Vera Wang outfit with a distinctive silhouette and style
